Voter Registration

To be eligible to register and vote in Michigan, you must be:

• • A Michigan resident and a resident of the city or township where you are registering to vote for at least 30 days by Election Day

• • A U.S. Citizen

• • Not currently serving a sentence in jail or prison

To check if you’re registered to vote where you live, visit mi.gov/vote and click on “Your voter information.”

Remember, leave the killer campaign clothes and accessories at home!

If you are registering to vote 15 days or more before Election Day, you can register:

• • By Mail

• • Online

• • Through a voter registration drive

• • In person at any Secretary of State branch office, any state agency that provides services to people with disabilities or public assistance, your county clerk’s office, or your city or township clerk’s office.

If you are registering to vote within 14 days of the election through 8 p.m. on Election Day, you must register in person at your city or township clerk’s office with proof of residency.

• Proof of residency is a document that includes your name and current address. Examples include:

  • • a Michigan driver’s license or state ID card

  • • a utility bill

  • • a bank statement bill

  • • a paycheck

  • • a government check

  • • any other government document

Abroad Registration

If you plan to study aboard and need to register to vote, you must fill out a FWAB or FPCA form, which requires the following:

• A Michigan resident and a resident of the city or township where you are registering to vote for at least 30 days by Election Day;

  • • Full name

  • • Date of birth

  • • Registration address and current address

  • • Driver’s license or state ID or the last 4 digits of Social Security number.

* Deadline: Signed and completed FPCA must be received by a voter’s local clerk by 2 p.m. on the Saturday before Election Day. Options for returning an FPCA, including email, fax, or regular mail

Permanent Mail Ballot List

If you check the permanent mail ballot list box when you apply for your absentee ballot, you will receive an absentee ballot automatically for every future election in your community without having to submit an application each time!

Abroad Ballot Requestment

Absentee ballots for overseas voters may be requested at any time before an election, and ballots are generally mailed beginning 45 days before an election.

You will need to provide the following information:

• • Full name

• • Date of birth

• • Jurisdiction (Michigan city or township and county)

• • Classification [reason for requesting a Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) ballot]

• • Registration address and current address

• • Driver’s license number or state ID number or the last 4 digits of Social Security number

• *Deadline: Voters living overseas (or serving in the military) must have their completed absentee ballots postmarked on or before Election Day and received by their local clerk within 6 days after the election to be counted.
