If you are registering to vote 15 days or more before Election Day, you can register:

  • • By Mail

  • • Online

  • • Through a voter registration drive

  • • In person at any Secretary of State branch office, any state agency that provides services to people with disabilities or public assistance, your county clerk’s office, or your city or township clerk’s office.

If you are registering to vote within 14 days of the election through 8 p.m. on Election Day, you must register in person at your city or township clerk’s office with proof of residency.

  • Proof of residency is a document that includes your name and current address. Examples include:

    • • a Michigan driver’s license or state ID card

    • • a utility bill

    • • a bank statement bill

    • • a paycheck

    • • a government check

    • • any other government document

Abroad Registration

If you plan to study aboard and need to register to vote, you must fill out a FWAB or FPCA form, which requires the following:

  • A Michigan resident and a resident of the city or township where you are registering to vote for at least 30 days by Election Day;

    • • Full name

    • • Date of birth

    • • Registration address and current address

Permanent Mail Ballot List

If you check the permanent mail ballot list box when you apply for your absentee ballot, you will receive an absentee ballot automatically for every future election in your community without having to submit an application each time!

Abroad Ballot Requestment

Absentee ballots for overseas voters may be requested at any time before an election, and ballots are generally mailed beginning 45 days before an election.

You will need to provide the following information:
  • • Full name

  • • Date of birth

  • • Jurisdiction (Michigan city or township and county)

  • • Classification [reason for requesting a Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) ballot]

  • • Registration address and current address

  • *Deadline: Voters living overseas (or serving in the military) must have their completed absentee ballots postmarked on or before Election Day and received by their local clerk within 6 days after the election to be counted.

Step 2: Vote

All registered voters in Michigan may cast their ballot at their assigned polling location on August 6th (for the Primary Election) and November 5th (for the General Election). Polling locations are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. local time on Election Day. Voters in line by 8 p.m. have the right to cast a ballot.

Checklist:

  • ☑ Make sure to go to the correct polling location! You can find your polling location at mi.gov/vote .

  • ☑ Triple-check your voter registration; you have until 8 p.m. on Election Day to register at your city or township clerk’s office (with proof of residency) if needed!

  • ☑ You do not need a photo ID to vote in Michigan, but bring a photo ID if you have one. It will make the process go faster.

  • ☑ Leave the killer campaign clothes and accessories at home!

Reminder: The last day to vote is August 6.

Early voting works similarly to absentee voting. However, voters cast their ballot in person at an early voting center – just like on election day. Any Michigan registered voter can now cast a ballot in person up to 60 days before election day. The early voting period starts the second Saturday before election day and ends the Sunday before.

Checklist:

  • ☑ Be registered to vote!

  • ☑ Look up your early voting location within 60 days of the election!

  • ☑ Visit your early voting location with photo identification and vote!

  • For more information, click here!

Reminder: The first day of required in person early-voting July 27. The last day of in person early-voting is August 4th.

All registered Michigan voters can vote from home by absentee ballot starting 40 days before an election. You can request an absentee ballot at any time, but we recommend applying at least 30 days before the election to allow ample mailing time. To return your ballot via mail, send the ballot back at least two weeks before Election Day! (Ballot envelopes now come with pre-paid postage, so no need to add a stamp.)

Checklist:

  • ☑ At least 30 days before Election Day, request an absentee ballot online , by mail , or in person at your city or township clerk’s office.

  • ☑ Make sure to mark the box on your application to join the permanent mail ballot list if you wish to receive a ballot automatically before every election without having to submit an application each time!

  • ☑ Fill out your absentee ballot. Don’t forget to sign and date the return envelope!

  • ☑ Return your absentee ballot by mail, to a ballot dropbox provided by your city or township clerk or in person to your local clerk’s office. For most voters, your absentee ballot must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day. However, the ballots of voters serving in the military or living overseas must be postmarked by Election Day and received within six days of the election to be counted.

  • ☑ If returning your ballot by mail, please send it at least two weeks before Election Day.

  • You can also bring your absentee ballot to your early voting site or (if you live anywhere but Detroit) your polling place on Election Day, check in with the poll workers, and insert your ballot directly into the tabulator.

Reminder: The last day to register to vote by mail is Monday, July 22.
